Privacy Policy
The short version: What’s Their Name has no account and no server of ours. What you add stays on your iPhone and, if you turn on sync, in your own private iCloud. We can’t see it. We don’t sell it, share it, or use it for ads or AI training.
This policy explains how the What’s Their Name iPhone app (“the app”, “we”, “us”) handles information. It covers the app and this website.
What you store in the app
The app is a personal memory aid for people you already know. You choose what to add, and it may include:
- Names and nicknames
- Cropped face photos you select from your photo library (the original photo isn’t kept)
- Groups you create
- Your quiz history and results
- App settings
You pick photos with Apple’s photo picker, so the app only sees the photos you choose. It doesn’t get access to your whole library.
Where it lives
Your data is stored on your iPhone. If iCloud sync is on, it is also stored in your private iCloud database, which Apple operates under Apple’s privacy policy. Only your Apple Account can access it. We don’t run any server that receives or stores your data, and we have no way to view it.
Face detection
The app uses Apple’s on-device Vision framework to find faces in a photo so you can crop the right one. This happens entirely on your iPhone. The app doesn’t do face recognition or identification. It doesn’t match faces between people or against any database, and it doesn’t build a faceprint or other biometric template.
What we never do
- We don’t collect, sell, rent, or share your data.
- We don’t use your photos or names for advertising or to train AI or machine-learning models.
- There are no ads, no third-party analytics, and no tracking across apps or websites.
- Your Rolodex is never public, and there is no directory anyone can search.
Analytics and crash reports
If you’ve chosen in iOS Settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may give us aggregated usage statistics and crash reports. These don’t include your Rolodex contents. We don’t use any third-party analytics or crash-reporting services.
Purchases
If the app offers in-app purchases, Apple processes them through the App Store. We don’t receive your payment details.
This website
This site has no cookies, analytics, or tracking scripts. It’s hosted on Cloudflare, which may process standard technical information such as IP addresses to deliver and secure the site.
Deleting your data
You’re in control of your data:
- One person: delete them in the app. They move to Recently Deleted for 30 days, where you can restore them or delete them permanently.
- Everything: use Delete All Rolodex Data in Settings. This also removes the data from iCloud, and your other devices follow the next time they sync.
- Uninstalling: deleting the app removes its data from that iPhone. Data in iCloud stays until you delete it, either in the app or in iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud.
Copies in older device backups remain until those backups are replaced or deleted.
Other people in your Rolodex
The people you add aren’t users of the app, and their information stays within your own devices and iCloud. Please only add people you know and photos you have the right to use. If you’re in someone’s Rolodex, that data isn’t accessible to us. Please ask the person who added you to remove it.
Children
The app isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. We don’t collect personal information from anyone.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data. Because we don’t hold any of your data, you can use these rights directly in the app as described above. If you have questions, contact us.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we’ll post the new version here and update the date at the top. Significant changes will also be noted in the app’s release notes.
